SynthID: Watermarks for AI images 😬

AI is like the new kid on the block — super cool but also kinda tricky.

It’s tricky because AI-generated images can be incredibly real, and while that's neat for artists and creators, it's also a playground for fake news and misinformation.

So in order to “control” this, the AI community talked about watermarking images.

And Google made the first move yesterday.

Enter, SynthID

They released SynthID, which uses a new type of watermark that’s embedded directly into the pixels of an image.

This means the watermark is imperceptible to the human eye & detectable even if edited. The watermark will stick around, even if you slap on a filter, change the hue, or compress that JPEG.

Still in Beta for selected users, but Google plans to include it in its products very soon.

🚨 What else is going on

• Google announced many updates to their AI infrastructure, their Vertex AI tool for developers, and Duet AI for workspace apps

• OpenAI launched ChatGPT Enterprise, which offers enterprise-grade security and privacy, higher-speed GPT-4, longer inputs, advanced data analytics, and more. But, seems like retrieval of data is missing from the set of features — and it’s something that’s needed for big enterprises.

• Meta released CoTracker, a model for tracking any points (pixels) on a video
