Stable Diffusion XL 🚛

Yesterday, Stability AI released SDXL (Stable Diffusion XL) and it seems like the quality is much better, even with shorter prompts.

I played with it and here are a couple of things that I noticed:

  • Faster than Midjourney: You actually get the results in a couple of seconds

  • Shorter prompts: It understands simple prompts much better. Ex: most of the time it will comply with “no text” and “white background” directions, which wasn’t the case before

  • Text on photos: Massive improvement here. You can actually get a decent photo with text if you try it a couple of times. It won’t work always, especially for longer texts, but it’s getting there.

  • Much better at Illustrations: With the previous models, it was extremely hard to create illustrations that follow the prompt. Now it seems that’s greatly improved

  • Logos! Yes, finally SD can create nice-looking logos (use “iOS icon” or “logo, cartoon style” to test it.

  • Photography: I think still not as good at photography images as Midjourney. The photos still look artificial

  • Photorealism capabilities:The team said that this is the key thing for this upgrade, and with a few prompts I tested it seems like there is a lot of improvement

  • Hands are still weird! 😢

How can you use it?

You get free credits to test it out on their website. Then, it’s $10 to generate up to 5k images, which is not that expensive.

It’s also available via their API.

The good news is that they plan to outsource it soon!

WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON

🦙 Amazon enters the Generative AI race! They released CodeWhisperer (free for individual use) which is a direct competitor to GitHub CoPilot, and Bedrock, a platform that has enterprise offers for generative AI.

👀 The US administration is looking to regulate AI. They might seek public input on building trust in AI, like quality certifications for all of these AI models.

❌ Germany is considering a ChatGPT ban. Following the Italy ban, Germany is looking to ban ChatGPT due to privacy concerts. Nothing official yet.

🏋🏻‍♀️  Animate your drawings with FAIR, by Meta. They open-sourced the code, and you can access it here. It’s definitely refreshing to see Meta outsourcing a lot of their models lately!
