Meta’s LLaMa model leaked: Here’s what happened 🏴‍☠️

Meta released their GPT-3 competitor, LLaMa, a few weeks ago. According to their “release”, only academic researchers can request access to the model through a simple Google Form.

No API & no open-sourced code.

A couple of days later - the model is leaked!

Two people who got access through that form, leaked and distributed the model to the public via torrents (HN link).

+ someone added a “PR” with the torrent link to their model in the public LLaMa codebase on GitHub.

And just yesterday, someone released a script that downloads the model ~18x faster than the torrent.

Meta can trace the leaker

One of the leakers made the mistake of adding their unique download URL to it, so Meta can trace it easily.

It’s like they want to be found, right? 🃏

Is it safe to download?

The folks who leaked the model and people who tested it say that the link is safe, but I didn’t test it myself so can’t guarantee that.

Is the model as good as GPT3?

Folks say that “The output is at least as good as GPT3.” They made it translate, write poems, tell jokes, banter, and write executable code.

It does it all-- and all on a single card, on your own computer.

Where do we go from here?

The model is out there, & I am very curious to see how Meta will respond.

Maybe we’ll have an open-sourced GPTChat competitor by Friday?
