Watermarks for AI text ๐ฌ
might be just around the corner
OpenAI wants to watermark GPT-generated text ๐
OpenAI is working on a "watermarking function" to mark the output of text generation models with a special, hidden signal. And they actually have a working prototype. ๐ฌ
How it works?
For GPT every input and output is a string of tokens, that are generated randomly. To watermark, OpenAI wants to pseudorandomize & slightly bias the output. Basically, this function will pick the next word in a text and only OpenAI will know how it works. This change will not be noticeable to the reader, but someone with the specific key will be able to determine if the text was generated by a machine or a person.
Why do we need watermarks?
The tool could be used to prevent academic plagiarism or the spread of false information. It could also be used to protect people from having their writing style copied without their permission.
The tool could also be used by Quora/Stackoverflow which already reported they get a lot of incorrect AI-generated answers.
It could also tell Google if your articles are generated by AI. ๐
Can you delete the watermark?
Well, you can try to change the text, but the watermarking signal will still be there.
However, it is not foolproof, as the signal can be lost through paraphrasing with another AI model that doesn't have a "watermarking" solution in place.
