Microsoft's $10B Bet on OpenAI
a complicated deal that can get OpenAI to a $29bn valuation
Hi folks! 👋🏻 It looks like Microsoft is getting ready for a major comeback - and it's all because of the rumored investment in OpenAI.
But what does it all mean?
I did all the research, so you don't have to. Let's dive in 🤿
Microsoft's Big Bet on OpenAI: Here's what we know
The internet is buzzing with the news that Microsoft plans to invest $10 billion into OpenAI, which will set OpenAI's valuation to a whopping $29 billion.
But the deal is far from perfect.
Microsoft will get 75% of OpenAI’s profits until they recoup the investment. After that threshold is reached, Microsoft will have a 49% stake, other investors taking another 49% and OpenAI’s nonprofit parent getting 2%.
So, before OpenAI agrees to that complicated deal - they should at least have a clue on how to monetize this, I guess?
Rumor has it that ChatGPT's monthly running cost is around $3 million - that's a lot of pennies!
So right on cue, Greg, OpenAI's co-founder, released a waitlist for paid ChatGPT access, with a lot of questions about pricing.
They are starting to test the waters and see what people are willing to pay.
Why is Microsoft willing to spend that much?
Microsoft missed out on the internet and mobile revolution and this might be once in a lifetime opportunity to be a leader in the AI revolution.
And they need to move fast.
Their biggest competitor Google acquired Deep Mind in 2019 and is working on its own dialog LLM called LaMDA.
Using OpenAI's models they can make a more powerful Bing and get a bigger share of the search market. They can also enhance all of their software & hardware with built-in AI features.
Last but not least, OpenAI relies on Azure so the more ChatGPT is used, the more money flows into Microsoft's pockets.
